Poll Workers wanted

The Supervisor of Elections (SOE) office could use folks for election night help to check in poll workers who will be returning ballots at offices/drop off sites.

The SOE will also need poll workers for future elections. They're having orientations in April to recruit additional workers.

Poll workers must attend training prior to each election and are paid $160 to $275, depending on the position assigned, for training and working at the polls.

Sarasota County Elections Chief reminds everyone to check their voter status now or get registered to VOTE BY FEBRUARY 18 for the upcoming March 17 Florida Presidential Preference Primary vote.

The details:

Voter Registration Deadline Nearing for March 17 Presidential Primary

The last day for a person to register or to update his/her party affiliation to be eligible to vote in the March 17, 2020, presidential preference primary is Tuesday, February 18, Sarasota County Supervisor of Elections Ron Turner has announced.

Turner recommends that voters confirm before the February 18 deadline that they are registered to vote and that their voter registration information is current. A voter may check his or her voter eligibility at SarasotaVotes.com. Just click on “Voter Information” in the main menu and then on “Voter Lookup” and follow the easy instructions. New paper voter registration applications and party changes must be completed, signed and returned in person to an elections office or postmarked by the February 18 deadline. Applications submitted electronically before midnight on February 18 through RegistertoVoteFl orida.gov will also be accepted.

Applications are available at all three elections offices in Sarasota, Venice and North Port; at public libraries, military recruitment offices, and public assistance offices, and may be downloaded at SarasotaVotes.com. Voter registration applications may also be submitted through any driver's license or tax collector’s office that issues Florida driver licenses or Florida ID cards.

Board of Sarasota County Commissioners

On Tuesday, Nov. 6, vote for diversity in government. Right now, we have none. The 50-year reign of a single party is never healthy; in Sarasota County it's petrified our Boards and the people who serve them. Around the county, communities like Sura's are working hard to prevent having their neighborhoods ruined by overbuilding, traffic, flooding, and related ills of dumb growth. As Kelly Kirschner recently wrote, the imbalance of powerful interests has compromised us. The explosion of new development - more than 30,000 new homes just in Northeast Sarasota --  will compromise us more.

On Sunday Nov. 11 at 4 pm, people will gather at Gulf Gate Mall to protest the gargantuan ambitions of Benderson Development's Siesta Promenade. The press will be there. Let Sura Kochman know if you'll be there by emailing her at SKbaystate@aol.com -- she recommends:

• WEAR BLUE SHIRTS
• MEET in the normally empty parking lot area in between the Bank of America and across from Hooters.
• BRING SIGNS (you can make)

Uncontested public representation is not Democracy

There are public offices up for election that have no opposition. 

For example, the Charter Review Board: Three of the five district races are single candidates. Without opposing candidates, they'll walk into office. 

A similar imbalance holds true for the Hospital Board:

On the Charter Review, one uncontested candidate seeking reelection to the Board is James Gabbert (of the Celery fields 16-acre open-air demolition waste processing fame). 

Candidates are needed to challenge them. 

-  It costs nothing to file for Charter Review Board: No qualifying fee or petition needed since it is an unpaid position
-  they meet only three times a year
-  make sure this board represents citizens, not special interests.

In 2016, the Charter Review Board did have opposing candidates. They were concerned about the Board's blocking citizen initiatives such as single district voting. The same issues are in play today.

    ​   On Monday, October 9, 2017 please join CONA for a presentation by our supervisor of elections, Ron Turner, who will inform you about how our elections are managed. A comprehensive overview will be provided, as well as, insights into the special election required this fall to replace the state representative who has resigned, the elections regularly scheduled for 2018, and many other election-related topics. 

​   

  This also may serve as your introduction to our new supervisor. He was elected to the office last November. He began his career with our county elections office as chief of staff, a position he held for five years prior to his election. He is nationally-certified as an elections and registration administrator through the Elections Center. 

​   

  A native Floridian, he has been very involved in the community since moving to our county in 2001. He serves as a director of First Step of Sarasota, is a graduate of Leadership Sarasota County, and is a member of the Disabled American Veterans.
